What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common but preventable oral health condition that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It typically begins with gingivitis, where plaque bacteria build up along the gum line, causing inflammation, redness, and bleeding—especially during brushing or flossing. At this early stage, gum disease is reversible with good oral hygiene, professional cleaning, and regular dental hygienist visits. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress into advanced periodontal disease, where the gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that trap bacteria. Over time, this can lead to infection, gum recession, persistent bad breath, and damage to the underlying bone. As bone loss worsens, teeth may become loose, shift position, or even fall out. Early diagnosis and treatment by a dental professional are essential to prevent long-term complications and maintain healthy gums and teeth.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is primarily caused by the build-up of plaque bacteria due to poor oral hygiene, such as inadequate brushing and flossing. However, several key risk factors can increase your likelihood of developing the condition, including smoking, which significantly impairs gum healing, and genetic predisposition, meaning it can run in families. Other contributing factors may include stress, certain medical conditions, and hormonal changes. If you notice symptoms such as bleeding gums, bad breath, or gum recession, it is important to seek professional advice promptly. Our experienced dental team can assess your gum health and, if needed, refer you to our in-house specialist periodontist for advanced care. Treatment may include deep professional cleaning (non-surgical periodontal therapy) to remove bacteria from below the gum line, helping to reduce pocket depth, support gum reattachment, and minimise the risk of bone loss.
